Shanghai had important progress in containing the spread of COVID-19. On April 27, 2022, there were 1,292 new local confirmed cases and 9,330 new asymptomatic cases. As 858 confirmed cases came from previously asymptomatic cases, the actual number of new positive cases was only 9,764. It was the first time for the figure to fall below 10,000. Some medical experts believed that Shanghai’s COVID-19 outbreak had reached a turning point.
In fact, Shanghai may have already passed the turning point. As we all know, in order to achieve “dynamic zero-Covid”, the first step is to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the community. The Shanghai Municipal Government would naturally try its best to “run faster than the virus” and put all infected people under quarantine. Shanghai began to move towards the goal of zero Covid-19 cases at community level in the early part of mid-April. The number of positive cases outside quarantine fell below the 7-day moving average on April 11. The downward trend continued in the subsequent weeks.
Because Shanghai further strengthened the quarantine measures, the number of areas, where achieved zero Covid-19 cases at community level, has increased significantly. Since April 23, the total number of new positive cases in Shanghai has been declining rapidly for several days. The figure fell below 10,000 on April 27.
