【Premium】Sinking Ship: Hong Kong Port Is Falling to The Lowest Position In Decades (EN)

This bar chart race shows the rise and decline of the top container ports of the world between 1997-2020. Hong Kong had long been the busiest container port in the world since the late 1980s. However, after being hit hard by the Asian Financial Crisis, the Pearl of the Orient was temporarily surpassed by Singapore in 1998. Hong Kong managed to regain the first place in the next year, but “permanently” lose the No.1 status when it was overtaken by Singapore again in 2005. Meanwhile, various ports in China, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Guangzhou developed quickly, and outpaced Hong Kong in the 2000s or 2010s. In 2020, Hong Kong port fell to the lowest position in decades – raking the 9th in the globe.
