This bar chart race shows the poor population (before policy intervention) in Hong Kong by district between 2009-2018. Kwun Tong, one of the first-generation new towns in Hong Kong, had the largest poor population. In 2018, about 175.8 thousand people lived under the poverty line (50% of the median monthly household income before policy intervention). The poor population in Sha Tin grew quickly in recent years. It increased by more than a quarter from 2014 to 2018. Wan Chai, which has long been the most affluent district in Hong Kong, had the smallest poor population.
