The map shows the Zhuangyuans in the first half of Tang Dynasty (618-755 AD) and their birthplaces. Only a few of them came from the southern part of China. For instance, only one Zhuangyuan, Zhang Jiuling, came from the geographically remote Lingnan Region. This Zhuangyuan distribution pattern of Zhuangyuans was closely related to the regional differences between the Northern and Southern China at that time. Before the An-Shi Rebellion, the northern regions were the mainstays of economic, social and cultural activities.
